How to prep for your spray tan

Prepping is the most important aspect of a spray tan. Properly preparing your skin is essential for achieving even, glowing results. Signs that indicate insufficient preparation include: darker or lighter spots than the rest of the body, color flaking off, uneven fading, or peeling skin.

Steps to prep your skin:

  1. Hydrate: Ensure you are drinking the recommended amount of water for your body for at least a week or two leading up to your tan. Dehydration can lead to dry skin, which we want to avoid.

  2. Moisturize: Apply a recommended moisturizer twice a day for at least a week before your appointment. We want your skin to be well-nourished and not show overall signs of dryness. Some dry spots are to be expected, but we aim to minimize them.

  3. Complete any Other Beauty Services: Schedule all nail, hair, shaving, waxing, massage, and other beauty services at least 48 hours prior to your spray tan. Many of these services can strip the tan from your skin, so plan accordingly.

  4. Exfoliate: Exfoliate your skin 12 to 24 hours prior to your spray tan using an exfoliating mat and soap or scrub. If you've had a tan in the last two weeks, pay close attention to removing any leftover tan. Exfoliating helps your body shed the dead skin cells that may absorb solution at different levels.

  5. Go Bare: After showering and exfoliating in preparation for your appointment, refrain from applying lotion, deodorant, makeup, or other products to your skin. Arrive at your appointment with bare skin to help your spray tan artist ensure an even application. Lotions and other products can prevent your skin from absorbing the spray tan evenly.

Remember, your spray tan's quality is directly influenced by your preparation! Properly prepping your skin also helps your spray tan last as long as possible. If you need product recommendations or specific instructions, don't hesitate to ask your spray tan artist!
